Walnut Grove Baptist Church History

CHURCH HISTORY

Walnut Grove Baptist Church was established at Cornelius Spring in 1856.  In the spring of 1866 a number of pioneer settlers met in the vicinity of the present Walnut Grove Community to organize a missionary baptist church.  The first church was a small frame building with seven windows, two on each side and one behind the pulpit and one on either side of the front entrance.  All of the furnishings were hand made.  There was a row of long benches on each side, with a single aisle down the center.

 

1891 The Walnut Grove Church hosted tis first Etowah Baptist Associational Meething, with Rev. H. R. Culbertson as moderator.

 

1925 A fire destroyed a home, the church and the Masonic Hall.  The church used the school house for services until the present church could be built.

 

1940  The Church was remodled.

 

1978 The Church was carpeted and new pews were purchased.

 

1981 The Church added on a baptistery and a kitchen.

 

1983 The steeple was added.

 

1990 A fellowhsip hall and classrooms were added.

 

2003 The Church was remodled.

 

2013 The Church purchased the property located behind the church and added a new digital sign.
